We understand that everyone wants to be compassionate to wild animals we see every day. Birds, squirrels, and even the river rats that populate parts of the Island. But RIOC pays an exterminator to lay traps to control the rat population because rats can be harmful to humans. They can spread disease or become aggressive and attack humans and other, smaller animals. like dogs and cats. The food you leave for pigeons and squirrels often attracts rats.
We have received troubling reports that some residents have either tampered with the traps or removed them all together. Please leave the traps alone and do not feed the animals. Constant contact with humans can be dangerous for them and for you.
