Have you ever wondered what those big trailer outside the RIOC offices at 680 Main Street were for? Believe it or not, they house equipment that is at the forefront of alternative energy technology innovation.
As part of Governor Cuomo’s commitment to making New York State a leader in combating climate change, RIOC is proud to host Verdant Power’s Roosevelt Island Tidal Energy (RITE) Project. RITE is a system of turbines that have been deployed in the East River to convert free-flowing water currents into electrical and mechanical power. Verdant Power believes this technology could one day be a valuable source of renewable energy due to the predictable nature of tides and river currents.
The project is supported by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA), which has been a long-standing partner of Verdant Power and the RITE Project. The vast project team includes many partners from around the globe, including Cornell University.
