Federal Officials Procure $250,000 Grant for Roosevelt Island Tram Modernization Project

Grant included in 2026 Congressional Appropriations Bill; Money to be used to modernize the Tram through structural upgrades, improved accessibility features, and enhanced safety systems

Roosevelt Island, NY (February 27, 2026) – Roosevelt Island’s federal Congressional delegation worked to secure a $250,000 grant in this year’s Appropriations bill for the Roosevelt Island Tram Modernization Project, a capital initiative of the Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation (RIOC).

The proposed modernization includes upgrades to the cabins and improvements to system controls and structural elements. Safety-focused improvements include the replacement of cabin doors for both the north and south cabins and the installation of modern platform doors at both stations. These upgrades will help reduce risk of accidents, improve operational efficiency, and better accommodate passengers with disabilities.

“Thousands of Roosevelt Islanders rely on the Tram every day to get to work, school, medical appointments, and to stay connected to the rest of the city,” said RIOC President and CEO B.J. Jones. “This investment will help ensure the system remains safe, accessible, and reliable for decades to come. We are deeply grateful to Senator Gillibrand, Congressman Nadler, and our federal partners for recognizing the Tram’s importance and for their advocacy and support in securing this critical funding for our community.”

“The Roosevelt Island Tram is a lifeline for residents and workers of the island that also provides a scenic and recreational option for many New Yorkers and visitors,” said Senator Kirsten Gillibrand. “I’m proud to have secured $250,000 in federal funding for the Roosevelt Island Tram Modernization Project. As ranking member of the Senate Transportation Appropriations Subcommittee, I’ll continue fighting for federal resources for improvements to public transit operations and infrastructure across New York.”

"I am proud to have fought for and secured this funding to modernize the Roosevelt Island Tram,” said Congressman Jerrold Nadler. “My number one goal in Congress is to improve the lives of all New Yorkers, and this project will do exactly that. Thousands of commuters, residents, and visitors will benefit from keeping the Tram safe and reliable. Let’s keep New York City moving!”

The Roosevelt Island Tram Modernization Project will deliver essential upgrades to one of New York City’s most unique and iconic public transportation systems. Originally opened in 1976, the Tram provides a critical aerial connection between Roosevelt Island and Midtown Manhattan, carrying thousands of commuters, residents, students, and visitors every day. While the Tram has undergone past updates, many components are now approaching the end of their useful life. This project is necessary to ensure the system remains safe, reliable, and efficient for decades to come.

This investment will directly benefit the broader New York region by strengthening an essential piece of public transportation infrastructure. It supports the City’s climate goals by encouraging use of mass transit, thereby reducing emissions and traffic congestion. Additionally, for the local Roosevelt Island community, the tram is more than transportation; it’s a lifeline. Residents depend on it for timely access to jobs, schools, healthcare, and cultural opportunities on the Manhattan side. Tourists, too, rely on the tram to experience a one-of-a-kind aerial view of the city, contributing to local economic activity.
